Details: Cultural diversity is discussed, including the
definitions of culture and diversity. Training is done on the importance of
cultural respect, and how to both gain it for yourself and how it is to other
cultures. The exercise uses all of the participants to create groups
representing different cultures. The groups utilize the cultural respect
training to experience the benefit that other cultures have to offer in
completing the group’s goal.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to define motivational interviewing, describe the stages of change and how they relate to motivational interviewing, list and describe the principles underlying motivational interviewing, and list and implement the five early strategies of motivational interviewing while demonstrating reflective listening techniques.

This one-day course is for counselors familiar with motivational interviewing. It provides counselors with tools to enhance the application of this counseling technique and provides opportunities to practice the skills of motivational interviewing.

Certificates of Completion will be awarded to participants at the end of the training. By the end of this course, participants will be able to utilize assessments to build motivation and inform the development of an individualized treatment plan for clients. They will also be able to develop an individualized treatment plan, including appropriate goals, objectives, and strategies/action steps that address client needs. Finally, participants will be able to identify ways to follow-up with clients regarding their treatment plans and implement strategies to keep clients engaged in the treatment process. This training is based upon SAMSHA’s Treatment Improved Protocol 35, and reviews a model for treatment planning based upon the principles of Motivational Interviewing.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to define chemical dependency/addiction, identify the approaches and goals of treatment, and define recovery. They will also be able to identify the stages of change and stages in the developmental model of recovery and define relapse based upon these models. Participants will be able to define relapse prevention and identify principles to help clients avoid relapse, and recognize the intersection between relapse and HIV. Finally, participants will be able to apply basic counseling skills in order to work with clients in various stages of recovery to avoid relapse.

Credit Hours: 6 Alcohol & Drug Specific, HIV/AIDS will be provided for participants who complete the entire training. However, no partial credit will be given for incomplete courses. Certificates of Completion will be awarded to participants at the end of the training. By the end of this course, participants will be able to identify gender differences in substance addictions; recognize common

vulnerabilities that put women at risk for trauma and subsequent stress disorder; discuss the diagnosis and treatment of women with HIV; name ways in which women in the substance-abusing link are at greater risk for STD and HIV infections.

Discuss the major goals and techniques of empowerment and relationship counseling; Identify their own personal feelings and sources of comfort/ discomfort related to counseling women, and state at least two ways in which they can develop their comfort level support effective empowerment counseling. Demonstrate the use of empowering skills and techniques in needs assessment and the risk-reduction counseling process; Identify elements in their programs that result in empowering/disempowering environments for women, and begin to develop actions steps to improve program responsiveness to women’s needs in two priority area; identify community resources for supporting behavior change among women.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to list differences between models of the family in substance abuse treatment and family therapy, identify clients in relation to multiple systems, including the family system, and list elements of the family system and describe patterns of interaction typical in a family with substance use. They will also be able to identify techniques from family therapy that can be used to enhance substance abuse treatment. Participants will be able to discuss how substance abuse and HIV/AIDS, as chronic diseases, lend themselves to family therapy, define special considerations and approaches for clients with HIV/AIDS in family therapy, and list the cost/benefits of an integrated approach between family therapy, substance abuse treatment, and counseling for clients with HIV/AIDS and their families. This training is based upon SAMSHA’s Treatment Improved Protocol 39, and describes how family therapy can help address the needs of families where substance abuse and HIV infection are present.
